The decision by the head of state has brought heat in both Kirinyaga and Muranga regions after leaders decided to give a pice of their minds on the issue.
Kirinyaga Governor Joseph Ndathi said the move will 'kill Kirinyaga county economically'.
“We shall meet soon and write to the Head of State over the matter,” Ndathi said said expressing the residents unhappy state.
“When we met the president last week at Sagana State Lodge, he told us that a politician from Murang’a visited him at State House and convinced him of the need to take the project there,” a nominated MCA, George Kagori said.
Gitura has been on the forefront pushing for the divertion of the route, his argument being that the route through Muranga is shorter.
He said the road will revitalise the county economy if redirected from the Sagana highway to pass through Murang’a town.
Kembi said the Kenol-Sagana-Marua road should pass through Murang’a town.
“If the road is constructed as it is designed it will have an adverse impact on Murang’a town, which has been struggling to develop economically,” he said.
However, the re-routing has brought about political heat within the Muranga county leadership with a section of them saying the push was by Senator Kembi and others say it was brought about by Governor Mwangi Wa Iria's closeness to Deputy President William Ruto.
Kigumo MP Jamleck Kamau is also said to have joined hands with Kembi to push for the project whose designing is ready and awaits the financing to kick off.
This twist of events leaves a lot untold and only time will tell if the project will indeed pass through Muranga, and if it does, then what essence will the credit on any of the leaders be.
