Governor Iria needs to push for the Hawkers bill 2018, time is now

Governor Mwangi wa Iria

Maybe it is time we seriously thought about the Hawkers Bill drafted by Muranga Governor Mwangi wa Iria.
The bill seeks to help find a lasting solution to the rise in number of Hawkers and Vendors in major towns and cities in this country.
The bill which is at a public participation proposes funds and training
Classified as a private members bill, Governor Iria proposes that there will be structures that will see all hawkers represented in the Kenya National Chambers of Commerce and Industry, and national and international trade organisations.
“They contribute over Sh3.6 trillion annually to our country’s economy but they are treated as criminals and it is time we stop criminalizing the informal sector,” governor Mwangi said when he presented it to the Speaker of the Senate.
The Nairobi has in the recent past embarked on the demolition of stalls and make shift business premises set up by hawkers in areas like Nairobi's downtown, Eastlands and recently Thika road.
In Murang'a, the county government has come up with new levies for parking in small urban centres, as well as tax collection by the county council personnel.
This will affect the small time hawkers and vendors who will continue to increasingly be taxed despite the meager earnings they are getting.
According to data from Kenya’s Economic Survey 2015, the informal sector employed 11.8 million people in 2014 against 2.4 million in the modern or formal sector.
My friend Florence tells me that in Singapore, hawkers stalls and stands are a reflection of the country’s community spirit.
At these hubs of good, affordable food, it's not uncommon to see Singaporeans sharing a meal made up of Malay satay, Indian biryani, and Chinese oyster omelettes.
For visitors, it's a great way to sample all of Singapore’s quintessential dishes in one delicious sitting.
While hawker centers are common across the island, these are the long-established favorites among locals, and our picks for Singapore's best hawker centers.
For the continued harassment stop, then Hawkers bill 2018 should then be given more prominence and be processed into a law to help solve a the problems being faced by about 80 percentage of Kenyans who are the most affected.
