Teenage Pregnancy in Kenya, who to blame

Image
Courtesy The 2018 results exposed a potential national threat we could face as a country in the near future, over 100 girls who sat for the exam were pregnant. This has left all stakeholders in the education sector in shock as it exposes to levels of unprotected sex students and pupils below the age of 18 years are engaging in. Of the 100, 9 delivered as the exams were ongoing and leading to Kenyans expressing outrage on Social media accounts. According to statistics from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFP), between June 2016 and July 2017, 378,397 adolescents in Kenya aged 10 to 19 got pregnant. The organisations are now calling for a multi-disciplinary approach to end the vice that they say changes the dimension of childhood for the children involved. The organisations blame teenage pregnancy on continued erosion of cultures in the African set up. Many people who have had teenage pregnancy blame it on being lured by either older people or teachers in their respecti

What sh2 billion can do for thirsty Kenyans - Marsabit dam

The Marsabit park vegetation The abandoned lodge I have made it my business to step in all the 47 counties before the end of the year and at this rate, i might just do that before Jamhuri day. Early in the month i was in Marsabit and two things caught my eye, the green vegetation you see as you drive through the county and more so Marsabit town, and the second is lack of fresh piped water in the town and its environs. Parking outside Equity Bank at the heart of the town, you will see carts pulled by donkeys ferring tens of jerricans for water vendors who are making a killing in the town. The foot bridge Water shortage in Marsabit has been such a nightmare that people can go for days without seeing a drop during drought. You will only get fresh water in very few places like the hotel we stayed in, Saku guest house. In my tour i realized most hospitality businesses are on the verge of closing because of the lack of water. On the second day

One year later, Jubilee on the right track? Today marks the first anniversary of the Jubilee government tenure in office since the repeat polls in October 26, 2017. The goverment led by President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto was elected after the first poll was cancelled by Kenya's Supreme Court citing irregularities, and ordered a new one within 60 days. The election commission had declared incumbent Uhuru Kenyatta the winner by a margin of 1.4 million votes. Raila Odinga, Uhuru's opponent, said the commission was "rotten and demanded their resignation. President Uhuru would later in October clinch the seat with  7,483,895 votes out of the 7,616,217 valid votes cast. The Opposition however did not take part in the repeat poll as NASA supporters barred IEBC officials from delivering voting material and engaged police in running battles. Raila had pulled out of the race two weeks before the election saying it would be skewed like the first poll. He fur

What if the Chinese mean well, just what if?

Image
It is  not news anymore to see Chinese nationals across our TV channels for one reason or another. From building and construction, cheap products like phones, fish, rice and at times illegal businesses, the Chinese have taken over, or are about to take over most business ventures in our country, a move that is irking many Kenyans. However it could be that the good lord is making provision for his Kenyan people after more than 5 years of prayers and fasting by his servants. Aid In  March this year, the Chinese government extended a Sh50 million grant to Kenya to help provide relief to families affected by floods. This was after floods left thousands of people displaced mostly in Kilifi and Tana River counties. Matters finance, statistics indicate that Kenya has received soft loans and grants worth billions of dollars from China since the country gained independence five and a half decades ago. These are the resources that the Jubilee government is using to roll out developme

Uhuru finally says no, Punda amechoka

It is not every day that you see a President walk away from reading a formal speech prepared for him. But today President Uhuru Kenyatta has left many shocked after he blatantly refused to read a speech prepared for the Small Medium Enterprises Roundtable meeting at Strathmore University. Uhuru went further to admit that it is a disappointment by his government to  fail to make things better for the SME sector that had been important in the creation of employment for Kenyans. "Wacha nisijiabishe hapa kusoma maneno ambayo ni story pekee yake, (Let me not read the speech that is full of stories)," Uhuru told the attendees. In his casual speech, the President  went on to put various leaders on their toes on matters delivery to Kenyans. He started with Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko who was ordered to clean the Gikomba market a project that the President promised to personally inspect the rehabilitation project where sh500 million will be spent. "Sonko, ukikubali utoke hapa u

For fine things in life, we introduce Zipang Lounge

Have you set foot in an Irish pub, well i have, but it was under construction at the time.... In my small time research, i have found out that any establishment is unique based on unique culture centred around a casual and friendly atmosphere, hearty food and drink, Irish sports, and at times traditional Irish music. ION , a humorous writer and master of wits has written some good words about the hottest thing that has happened to Mombasa Road in the recent past, Zipang Lounge Get carried away When I travel, and I have been here and there doing this and that, top on my list of to do things is sampling as varied a menu as I can comfortably sample. Exotic meals, local dishes, name it. So I have experienced quite a varied fare. I have eaten ‘Fufu with green green’ where the accompaniment is escargot, if you catch my drift, at that local foods place inside Accra Mall in Ghana. With soup to die for I must say. Especially with just the right amount of pepe..what we call

When men scream......

Viewpoint Wekesa the chef The foot of Longonot Quenching thirst A day comes in a man's life when you must decide what is important in your life. And one of those days happened to me, i am a family man and that is something sacred, i work many hours and with utmost dedication that you would get, and especially in the past one year it has not been an easy one. After pushing the body for over a year with no leave days, with pressure from work and other  hustles (read political), i decided to tone it down and take a breather. Last week i met a few people, casually called Fantastic, Don, Kirere and Sherry. The five of us settled on taking  a day off of our usual engagements and run around and see what Kenya has to offer. The itinerary was to run from 5am to 10pm. First, Kenyans are yet to master the art of keeping time, ask Don and his sister Fantastic on this. We ideally left Kigumo at 6.30am. An hour later we were in Kiambu's hub of business, Githurai and ye

Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, 40 years later

Image
The late Mzee Jomo Kenyatta takes oath of office as Prime Minister. Kanu won 83 seats out. Photo/Courtesy I was not born when the Founding father and first President of this great republic Kenya passed away on August 22, 1978. However as an avid reader of history and politics i have over time learnt of the kind of man he was, both as a leader and a family man. Forty years after his demise, the memories and dreams of the late President live o. A visionary leader Mzee Jomo Kenyatta passed away in State House Mombasa at 3am according to one Lee Njiru who was Secretary to former President Daniel Moi. However his passing away was made minutes to noon and left the nation shaken to the core. After the announcement, final plans for his burial commenced as the finer details had been planned ten years prior his demise by the then Attorney General Charles Njonjo. Jommo, or as was named Kamau was mourned by countries over as an Independent Hero who had helped drive the nation fr

The Kigumo challenge

Image
Kigumo MP Ruth Wangari. Photo/COURTESY A leader is born with the traits in them, thereby explaining the analogy that they are God sent. The Man Theory as well as Trait Theories will elucidate that people inherit certain qualities and traits that make them better suited to leadership. There are certain inborn characteristics that predispose people to be and become leaders. A research conducted in 2013 also found out that acquiring a leadership position mostly depends on developing skills, inheriting the leadership trait can also play an important role. Anyway enough on theories and research. A friend of mine, KaDenno the other day challenged me to pen my thoughts on my home Constituency, Kigumo, matters leadership and current affairs. I have a personal principle of abstaining from airing my take on some issues, and this is one of them because of my interest(s), stand and even perception of WHAT and HOW Kigumo Constituency should be. August 8th was the end and beginning of a

Re-route rivers? Have we done feasibility or 'fisibility' studies?

Image
Governor Ferdinand Waititu. Photo/CITIZEN TV Kenya I have seen mixed reactions on matters re-routing of rivers in the city and its environs as opposed to demolishing buildings built on riparian lands. This is after Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu alias Baba Yao made the remarks which have been received with a pinch of salt. The re-routing or as Google calls it River engineering, is the process of planned human intervention in the course, characteristics, or flow of a river with the intention of producing some defined benefit. This kind of environmental change is essential as it helps protect against flooding, or to make passage along or across rivers easier. However there are also drastic effects on the same rivers once re-routing is done. A wise man says the day the bottom of the bucket falls there is no stoppage When Governor Baba Yao calls on the government to stop demolishing illegally built structures i ask myself this; Why would a government spare some illegal structure bui

Hong Kong-based smartphone manufacturer Infinix is back again with a boom, this time with Infinix Hot 6 and Infinix Hot 6 Pro. The new gadget is being launched this year in Kenya and has been sending teasers with the hash tag # 6isComing   and # DoubleAmazing. Read: Review of  mind blowing Hot 5 Pro The phone will be the company’s first device with a FullView display in Kenya. I also expect it to be  embrace the 18:9 aspect ratio and it is not surprising to see Infinix join in too. The 5 Pro flagship had  a 12-megapixel primary camera on the rear and a 16-megapixel front shooter, so the new device will sure capture memories better than any i have seen in recent past.  With Hot 5 pro having 6GB of RAM with 128GB of internal storage and a Helio P25 processor (MT6757), i will not be surprised if the 6 pro phone has Snap

Late Governor's PA Gakuru's story: Huduma Centre people told me the can't replace an ID for someone with no fingers

One day I am seated in the house and I ask my wife. 'I am told many came to see me at the hospital. Please because I can't remember that Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday you need to tell me who came '. Shaking her head shocked says 'How now, si you talked to them. How now don't you remember '(story for another day). That 7th November 2017.  My memory has refused to remember details to-date. But I remember when going for theatre I was to have my hand cut off from the wrist, but on gaining conscious after two days I found the hand tucked inside the abdomen. Doctor told me  something "for the hand trauma I decided to do a flap reconstruction so that you may have a" palm maybe to hold something. It's 50/50,it works at times and others it fails but no harm trying. I would stay with the hand in the abdomen for 7weeks. Sleeping only with the back, can't even seat well. Daily wound dressing. Long days and nights. Dates stuck in me. 10th December w
